A symbol inextricably linked with Kerala is the coconut tree, which is ubiquitous. In the city, even houses with small backyards will often have this tree towering over their home and the wall, often leaning over the wall and violating their neighbor’s air space. Every part of the tree is pressed into service, and probably the most delightful drink on a sweltering summer’s day is not Coke but tender coconut water. From the air, Kerala looks like a carpet of green, and as the plane descends, one can see that it’s the coconut trees that make up most of this carpet.
