Robot in Distress

Are you familiar with the noise a ceiling fan makes when operating on inverter power? It’s a distinctive sound that varies from a barely audible hum to an unearthly groan, depending on the characteristics of the fan. The sound is a protest from the fan at the square-shaped waveform the inverter is force-feeding it, when it usually gets the smooth sine-shaped waveform from the mains supply.

The other day, my 9-year-old son said the sound was like a robot in distress.

Word perfect!
