Cobra Wakes Up Sleeping Legislators

A cobra disrupted proceedings in the Orissa Assembly. It was spotted in a threatening posture near the chief minister’s table, and subsequently vanished despite the most intensive snake hunt in Indian history. Work in the assembly resumed later, but a doctor with vials of anti-venom has been permanently posted outside the assembly, in case the unthinkable happens. An inquiry is on that will explore how the snake managed to break the security cordon and get in. It will also examine if this incident could be the handiwork of the chief minister’s numerous political enemies.

Gory details here: http://www.hindu.com/2009/07/24/stories/2009072461162000.htm

You know what? This may sound heretical, but I’m on the side of the cobra. Besides, the legislators will be less likely to sleep on the job (a practice Indian legislators are habituated to) from now on.

Update: It took two days, but the cobra was found and captured after all. But not before it bit two people! I tell you what, that snake has spunk!
