People at Work: Cobbler

This photo shows a cobbler on M.G. Road. His face is hidden in the shadows, but it’s clear from what is visible that he’s not a person to be trifled with. Note the ingenious way in which a portable shelter has been made from discarded material.

People associate India with beggars, but they don’t seem to notice people like this cobbler, who are poor but don’t complain and cheerfully go about their business, doing what must be done. Has anyone wondered why levels of violence and crime in India are low compared to say, the U.S., despite great material deprivation?

These guys are our heroes! I salute them.
