People at Work: Mendicant

A pair of mendicants on their way to an unknown destination. Note the characteristic saffron color. Ironically, they’re in front of the residence of one of the richest men in the city, an automobile dealer with many fingers in many pies both in India and in the Gulf. The residence itself is a veritable castle set in sprawling grounds with ornamental walls and gates. I’ll put in a photo of the residence when I find it; I know it’s in my album somewhere. The road you see is one of the finest in Cochin, commissioned and built by the rich guy himself, as he wanted a good road in front of his house. Note the median studded with palm trees; in fact, this road is unofficially called Dubai Road. Also note the high-rises in the background; this part of Kaloor, behind the international stadium, is a real estate hot spot.
