People at Work: Drain Repairer

The underground water pipes in Cochin that carry water from the Periyar river to the city were laid by the British. As one can imagine, they are in bad shape because of age, and spring leaks frequently.

Below, a minor leak is attended to by workers from the unorganized sector, without whose efforts India would grind to an immediate halt. And do these guys get any thanks for their pains? Perish the thought. We avert our gaze as we walk by them so as to not meet their eyes.
