People at Work: Bringing the House Down

I was witness to this demolition of an old house recently. In a way, it was a sad sight. The building that will come up on its grave will be soulless and characterless. Most old houses have great character.

A construction boom is on in Cochin today, a boom that attracts a steady inflow of migrant workers from other states. Earlier they were almost exclusively Tamils, but today they come from as far away as West Bengal. Workers in Kerala earn a decent wage, unlike in many other parts of India.
