Snakes Alive!

The photo below is of a snake that was killed in a fight with dogs, right in the heart of Cochin city. The lethal bite is visible on the body. However, one of the dogs — a Doberman — died horribly hours later. The snake had bitten it right on the mouth. Another dog was bitten too, but survived because the snake had expended most of its poison in the first bite.

The identity of the snake? It’s a Russel’s viper, no less.

I have heard from more than one source that Cochin is infested with vipers, thanks to the construction boom. Soil and gravel are brought in trucks from distant places. Sometimes, these materials conceal a deadly stowaway.

By the way, it seems local breeds of dogs know better than to tangle with snakes.
