Eleven-Year-Old Commits Adultery

I was lazing in bed, watching my eleven-year-old son at work on his PC. I could see the command line window open, and he was typing commands at a furious rate. Wondering if he’d learned some commands, I asked him what he was doing.

I was shocked at his reply: “I’m doing adultery.”

When I’d recovered, I asked him to explain.

“Appa, I’m working in the command line window. That’s such an advanced, adult thing to do! Only experienced adults can work so expertly with the command line.”

“Son, where did you learn that word?”

“I’m not sure. I read it somewhere.”

And he returned to his command line.

I could see that he was keying in commands of his own invention (such as “Google Chrome upload file katinvision”), which triggered a cascade of “unknown command” and “file not found” error messages that he blissfully ignored.

It’s possible that he learned the word in a Sunday School class; the explanation given to the class may have been “Adultery is something adults do. So don’t bother your heads about it now. You will learn about it when you grow up and become adults.”

You see, my son is nothing if not logical. 🙂

The photo, by the way, shows the contents of a waste bin I happened to look into. 🙂

You see, from early childhood onward, my son’s father has had this habit of looking where he should not. 🙂
