Worldly-Wise 10-Year-Old

The other day a 10-year-old boy told my colleague’s daughter (also a 10-year-old), “You are very lucky because you are an only child. I’ll have to share what I get from my parents with my brother.”

The girl was confused and asked her mother what the boy meant.

Speaking for myself, I was much, much older before I came to grips with the notion of inheritance. Precocious kid, what?

  1. Precocious – and sad..

    • Yes, sad. But he was only reflecting the prevalent adult societal values. It’s hardly something original he came up with; his source material was the adult world around him.
