Birds of Cochin: White-Throated Kingfisher

Cochin is a birder’s paradise. The presence of numerous water bodies attracts a variety of water birds. Good places to spot birds within the city are in the sprawling campuses of public sector companies such as FACT and HMT. Mangalavanam, the bird sanctuary located inside the city, is an obvious candidate. The Salim Ali bird sanctuary in Thattekkad, which is a couple of hours by road from the city, attracts birders from all over the world. This newspaper article has more details:

The kingfisher is a hardy bird that is commonly spotted within city limits. I shot this on a road next to a canal the bird was hunting in. This is the white-throated kingfisher.
