Birds of Kerala: The Sri Lanka Frogmouth

I shot this Sri Lanka Frogmouth at the Thattekad bird sanctuary near Cochin. This bird is nocturnal and was sleeping on the stump of a branch on a tree at a height of fifteen feet above the ground. This is the amazing part: the moment I took my eyes off the bird to adjust my camera, I needed the guide’s help to locate it again, and this happened not just once but repeatedly! This is camouflage at its natural best. I wonder even today how the guide managed to spot the bird; it must have been the fruit of countless hours of bird watching.

The Sri Lanka Frogmouth is found only in the forests of Sri Lanka and the Western Ghats of India.
