The First Kochi Metro Pillar on M.G. Road

Picture 880_edited

This is the first pillar up on M.G.Road. The Kochi Metro project has already led to infrastructural improvements in the city: roads and bridges have been widened, and even a new bridge has been built. Imagine rows of these pillars snaking down M.G.Road, and trains full of commuters hurtling past up above.

Nearly a thousand such pillars will come up when the project is complete. A proposal to decorate the pillars with art from Kerala’s history and culture was shot down on the grounds that drivers on the road might be fatally distracted by the art. That leaves me wondering about all those roadside lingerie ads — which are what’ll end up on those pillars, I’m sure. 🙂

Ornate pillars or not, I, for one, am looking forward to my first ride on the Kochi Metro.
