The Three Places

Mordecai

Is there something special about the number 3? The holy trinity occurs in both Hinduism and Christianity. The three primary sciences studied in school are physics, chemistry, and biology, and there is an analogous triad in school math: arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.

Here is another triad to add to the above list. I’m quoting from a devastating review of the memoir Home Front by Reagan’s younger daughter, Patti, in Broadsides, a collection of essays by the Canadian writer Mordecai Richler. This is Patti speaking in her book (quoted by Mordecai in his review of the book):

When I was twelve, my mother [Nancy] told me that there are three places a boy may put his hand: in your hand, around your shoulders, and around your waist.

I’m publishing this piece of advice here for the benefit of mothers who may be struggling to give their adolescent daughters practical advice about boys.

Mother-reader, take it from here. 🙂
