Thulavarsham

Picture 298_edited

Thulavarsham, which arrived in Kerala a few days ago, is the Malayalam name for the retreating monsoon (the Northeast monsoon), which sets in during October and continues until November/December. Unlike the regular monsoon (the Southwest monsoon), it rains from the late afternoon onward, and the rain is usually accompanied by thunder and lightning.

I took the above photo one rainy night in October last year. A group of us had finished eating in a fast food joint, but hung around, waiting for the rain to slacken. It was the kind of rain against which the biggest umbrella is no defense.
