Blue Mormon at Teekoy

blue mormon.jpg

Shot at Teekoy in Kottayam district. The Blue Mormon is a favorite of mine, and my heart leaps whenever I spot it. I love the simple but elegant color scheme, and especially the subtle milky blue coloration.

Why the name “Mormon”? Because the male butterflies of the Mormon family have been observed to have several female partners. It’s an unfortunate name that perhaps only reflects the prejudices of an earlier era, but it’s too late to do anything about it now.

The name “Teekoy” also needs explanation: It’s not a Malayalam name. Apparently, the name of the village is derived from the name of a large estate set up in the village by a British planter from Sri Lanka. The name may be of Sri Lankan origin.
