The Southern Duffer

Southern Duffer.jpg

The appearance is unprepossessing, but don’t let that deceive you: this is a rare butterfly. It merits but a solitary sentence in Kunte’s Butterflies of Peninsular India. It was recently sighted at Sammilan Shetty’s butterfly park near Mangalore: Winged Beauty — Southern Duffer Visits Butterfly Park in Belvai.

I took this photo in September in Thattekad during the Dragonfly 2015 Meet. Fortunately, I was in the company of knowledgeable folk who spotted and identified this rare butterfly (Discophora lepida).

I wonder about the insulting name. Who called it a duffer and why? Inquiring minds would like to know.
