Finally, construction began on the vacant plot next door. For days on end there were the sounds of earth movers and pile drivers. A huge pit was dug that filled with groundwater, surrounded by hills of excavated earth. One day, the machines stopped coming, and silence has reigned ever since. A kingfisher couple has made its home in a hole in an earth mound, apparently because they get plentiful food from the dragonflies and tadpoles and other tasty lifeforms lurking in and over the water. It looks as though they may be starting a family. I wake up some days to the piercing long-drawn-out call of my kingfisher neighbor.
One day I managed to shoot my colorful new neighbor from the bathroom window.
