Chenkadali, Kerala’s Red Banana

"It weighs 33 kg," the owner of the shop from where I buy bananas regularly told me proudly, when he saw me taking a photo. The reddish brown color captivated me. I asked him from where he got it. He said "Muvattupuzah" (a near-by town), adding that this banana variety is called Chenkadali, and it has medicinal uses.

Two days later the brown had blossomed to a refulgent crimson that dazzled the eye.
