Cockscomb (Celosia) in Pallimukku

cocks comb.jpg

I shot this in Pallimukku. I'd never seen anything like this before. What on earth was it? It took some research to unearth the secret of this strange plant with flowers that almost look like pretty pustules, if you'll allow me that image. This is the fasciated flowerhead of the Celosia plant. Fasciation can be caused by bacteria, viruses, hormonal imbalances, damage to a plant's growing tip, etc. In Celosia, fasciation appears to be an inherited trait. The plant is not only ornamental but is also edible. I got all this information from Wikipedia.
